Let The Car Do The Driving: Mobileye IPO

Under the heading of "cool but creepy", Mobileye (MBLY), whose software and applications enable hands-free driving, debuts today on the NYSE.

Mobileye’s proprietary software algorithms and EyeQ® chip (now in its 3rd generation) perform detailed interpretations of the visual field in order to anticipate possible collisions with other licensed vehicles, pedestrians, animals, debris and other obstacles.

They posted rapid revenue growth of late and reported a $19.9 million profit last year, reversing a year-earlier loss, according to its prospectus. Its products were installed in about 3.3 million vehicles through March 31 and obviously growing.  They have also filed 15 patents thus far on their technology including several on their collision warning systems which one would believe is where the true value lies from a buyout perspective.

With more than 15 years of research and development and data collected from millions of miles of driving experience present a significant technological lead, winning more than 80% of the serial production programs for which Mobileye was invited to provide a quotation.

Mobileye is already working on the next evolution DAS technology – the autonomous driving – and is planning to launch, in the 2016 time frame and with two partner OEMs, the first hands-free capable driving at highway speeds and in congested traffic situations. The technology is enabled by a number of forward-facing cameras and a number of low-cost radars for redundancy. The feature set is also part of pre-development programs with 6 OEMs – programs that are likely to turn into serial production programs for 2018 time frame. A number of our Tier-1 partners are also designing the special configuration of forward-facing cameras based on our reference design in the anticipation of new programs with such a feature set. The next two leaps, which Mobileye anticipates to occur in the 2018 time frame is the inclusion of country roads and city traffic – capabilities that require some minor additional sensing hardware and major algorithmic leaps (which Mobileye is working on).

Just checkout it's founder in this video.  Next time you pass someone on the highway reading a book or newspaper, just pray Mobileye is in control.
